Managers vs. Leaders
Do you have a manager or a leader?
One of the major reasons I was led to leave the staffing industry was all too often companies refused to terminate or coach managers.
Instead, they called us to recruit for people who could "handle the job".
All too often, business owners would be aware that they had a toxic manager on site, but since they had long tenure, perceived valuable knowledge, or knew where the bodies were buried, they had immunity from consequences.
Ownership decides to hire "thick skinned" individuals rather than address the real problem at hand.
There is one thing I know, good leaders seldom suffer from an ability to attract new talent.
Good leaders can make an announcement of a job opening and folks will flock to their door to be under their guidance, often earning less than what they had previously in the exchange of peace, professionalism, and healthy communication.
So, if you are a small business owner and your second in charge is constantly blaming the "damn millennials" work ethic or pandemic, maybe you have a manager in your presence and not a leader.
