Become a Competitive Candidate and Employee through Developing Your Leadership Potential

Check out this article review of Dawn's podcast interviewing John Crossman. Although business leaders continually invest in developing employees' leadership skills, you too - the job seeker/employee - can take action to build strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. What is one step you could take today (taking on a new role at work, attending a training, volunteering in the community, etc.) to boost your leadership potential?

In episode 20 of the “Hiring Happy Humans” podcast, Dawn Sipley speaks with John Crossman about leadership qualities in business. Not only why they are useful, but how to gain them, how to use them, and how they can improve your life outside of your business. One of the things that said during this podcast by Crossman was very significant to me. He said, “You’re a leader if you’re seeking to influence others.” Effective leadership steers companies toward achieving goals, fostering innovation, and maintaining competitive advantages. All of this hard work requires inspiration to start and continue with the job. Leaders promote values like integrity, accountability, and collaboration. Without those values, a company is likely to struggle and tank. Employees need to remain inspired to continue with these crucial values. A good leader will inspire and motivate them, not only promoting these values, but increasing job satisfaction and productivity in the long run.

It can be hard to find a way to learn this leadership, as a lot of it seems natural. Gaining experience in a leading role is a major way to benefit your business. Taking on those roles, learning from mentors, and attending workshops are all good ways to gain this first-hand experience. Regularly reflect on your style, strengths, and areas for improvement. If you struggle to reflect on your own leadership skills, ask those who you lead. Getting feedback from peers, supervisors, and team members can help you understand the things you need to work on to further improve your business. Developing and utilizing leadership qualities can significantly enhance your professional success. By continuously learning, gaining experience, and applying these skills in different circumstances, you can lead more effectively and improve your overall quality of life.
